Mechanical / Thermal Engineer

Develop Innovative satellite platforms for telecom constellations. You’ll own the mechanical and thermal design of the FRIISAT spacecraft, from concept through analysis, test and production. Working closely with systems engineering, payload, AIT and manufacturing partners, you’ll be responsible for mechanical and thermal architecture.

What You Will Do

  • Mechanical design & analysis: Spacecraft structure and mechanical architecture: primary/secondary structure, equipment accommodation, deployables and interfaces.
  • 3D CAD modelling, drawings and configuration control of the mechanical design.
  • Finite Element modelling and structural analysis: static, modal, sine, random vibration and shock.
  • Launch loads assessment, launcher interface and stack/dispenser compatibility.
  • Margin of safety and stress analyses, mass properties and mechanical budgets.
  • Design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly for serial production.
  • Thermal design, simulation & analysis: Thermal architecture and thermal control design (passive and active): radiators, coatings, MLI, heaters, heat pipes, thermal interfaces.
  • Thermal mathematical modelling (geometric and lumped-parameter) and orbital thermal simulation.
  • Hot/cold case definition and analysis for the VLEO environment, including atomic-oxygen effects on coatings and materials.
  • Thermal budgets and temperature predictions for platform and payload units.
  • Test activities: Thermal vacuum (TVAC) and thermal balance testing: test definition, predictions, execution support and correlation.
  • Vibration testing (sine, random) and shock testing: test specification, predictions and post-test evaluation.
  • Coupled Load Analysis (CLA) with the launcher authority: model delivery, load cycles and results assessment.
  • Launch campaign support: spacecraft preparation, integration on the launcher and mechanical/thermal launch-site activities.
  • Test plans, procedures and test reports.
  • Across both: Requirements, interface definition (mechanical and thermal ICDs) and design reviews.
  • Trade-offs for cost, mass and producibility; COTS accommodation and qualification support.
  • Supplier coordination and hands-on participation in AIT/AIV (vibration, shock, TVAC campaigns).
  • Technical documentation and verification reports.

What We Are Looking For

  • Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 1+ year in spacecraft mechanical and/or thermal engineering.
  • Experience in spacecraft structural design and FE analysis.
  • Experience in spacecraft thermal design and thermal simulation.
  • Hands-on with environmental test campaigns to some level (vibration, shock, thermal vacuum).
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and thermal engineering standards.
  • Product-oriented, hands-on mindset; comfortable moving between analysis, design and hardware.
  • Tools: ESATAN-TMS (thermal), ANSYS (FEM), CAD tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.

Valuable Additional Experience

  • Mission analysis experience.
  • New Space or small-satellite background, VLEO/LEO environment experience (atomic oxygen, drag).
  • Serial or small-series production, deployable mechanisms.
  • COTS accommodation and space qualification.
  • Coupled structural-thermal analysis.
  • Italian/German/French/Spanish language skills.

Why Join Us & Hiring Details

At Freezz you won’t work on a narrow slice of the spacecraft: you’ll get your hands on both the structure and the thermal design of a satellite built to fly – and to fly soon. We take a new approach to building spacecraft: short design-analysis-test loops, real hardware on the bench early, and decisions made by the people who do the work, from day one and without committee overhead. That means a steep, fast learning curve. You’ll see your analysis turn into hardware, your hardware go through test, and your design head to orbit. And you’ll learn it in a lean, enthusiastic team where building satellites is serious work and real fun, that’s the added value we offer. All of this as part of a European New Space success story backed by ESA and EU programmes.

How to Apply

  • Please fill up the application form on this page.
  • Where relevant, candidates are encouraged to include examples of technical projects, publications, portfolios, Git repositories, or descriptions of systems they have helped design.
  • Freezz welcomes applicants from different backgrounds. Selection decisions are based on professional qualifications, experience, and the requirements of the position.
  • We review applications on a rolling basis and respond within 5 business days. We’re actively hiring and moving fast. If you’re a strong fit, expect to hear from us quickly.
