Develop the signal-processing technology behind direct satellite connectivity. Freezz is developing Friisat, an integrated satellite-connectivity platform designed to complement terrestrial mobile networks. Using satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit, Friisat aims to provide reliable, low-latency connectivity directly to personal and vehicular devices. For our locations in Italy and Switzerland we are looking for a Telecommunications Engineer with strong expertise in Low-PHY implementation, digital signal processing, beamforming, and FPGA/SDR development.
What You Will Do
- Design and implement Low-PHY algorithms for satellite and terrestrial wireless communication systems.
- Develop solutions for synchronisation, modulation and demodulation, channel estimation, equalisation, coding, decoding, and link adaptation.
- Design and optimise precoding, beamforming, beam-management, and spatial signal-processing algorithms.
- Address satellite-specific challenges such as Doppler shift, propagation delay, time and frequency offsets, moving coverage areas, and rapidly changing channels.
- Create floating-point and fixed-point models using MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C, or C++.
- Convert algorithmic models into efficient FPGA implementations.
- Develop, integrate, and validate FPGA logic using VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog, HLS, or comparable technologies.
- Build SDR-based prototypes for rapid algorithm validation and over-the-air testing.
- Optimise designs for throughput, latency, FPGA resources, memory use, power consumption, and numerical accuracy.
- Integrate PHY components with RF front ends, embedded processors, higher protocol layers, and network-control systems.
- Define test vectors, automated verification procedures, and hardware-in-the-loop test environments.
- Investigate performance issues across algorithms, firmware, RF hardware, and network configuration.
- Contribute to Friisat’s technical roadmap and system-design reviews.
What We Are Looking For
- Degree in telecommunications, electrical engineering, signal processing, computer engineering, or a related discipline; or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong knowledge of digital communications and DSP fundamentals.
- Practical understanding of OFDM, MIMO, channel coding, channel estimation, synchronisation, equalisation, and digital beamforming.
- Experience implementing DSP algorithms on FPGA or SDR platforms.
- Proficiency with at least one HDL and one modelling or programming environment.
- Understanding of fixed-point design, clock-domain crossing, high-speed data paths, timing closure, and FPGA resource optimisation.
- Working knowledge of 5G NR radio technology, RAN architecture, and 3GPP NTN concepts.
- Ability to analyse a complete communication chain rather than treating PHY implementation in isolation.
- Professional working proficiency in English.
Valuable Additional Experience
- Master’s degree in telecommunications, electrical engineering, signal processing, computer engineering, or a related discipline; or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience with AMD/Xilinx, RFSoC, USRP.
- MATLAB/Simulink HDL workflows, GNU Radio, or custom SDR frameworks.
- Adaptive beamforming, phased arrays, precoding, or interference cancellation.
- 3GPP Release 17 or later NTN features.
- Satellite channel modelling and link-budget analysis.
- Fronthaul interfaces, Low-PHY/High-PHY partitioning, or accelerator architectures.
- Embedded Linux, device drivers, or FPGA – CPU integration.
- CI pipelines and automated verification for FPGA or DSP development.
Why Join Us & Hiring Details
This role sits at the centre of Friisat’s technology stack. You will take communication concepts from mathematical models to real-time hardware and help solve the unique signal-processing challenges of connecting fast-moving satellites directly to terrestrial devices.
